Elton John - Candle In The Wind (Goodbye Yellow Brick Road)
Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you on the treadmill
And they made you change your name
CHORUS:
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind.
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in.
I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid.
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did.
Loneliness was tough
The toughest role you ever played
Hollywood created a superstar
And pain was the price you paid
Even when you died
All the press still hounded you
All the papers had to say
was that Marilyn was found in the nude
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind.
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in.
I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid.
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did.
Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
Goodbye Norma Jean
From the young man in the 22nd row
Who sees you as something more than sexual
More than just our Marilyn Monroe
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind.
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in.
I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid.
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did.
Your candle burned out long before
your legend ever did.

The original is practically a different song, penned from the woman's perspective and performed in a very soulful traditional blues style. This version has different rhythmic structure, altered lyrics, and a much edgier feel and arrangement (some nifty piano work toward the end). Anyway, I share your appreciation of the earlier albums.

This is a good and a welcome change with ballads not donimating the album. I agree that its not as good as the albums you've mentioned (with the exception of Caribou) but its an album that's different that features many underrated songs......Ironically the album's best song is I Fell Like A Bullet...the only ballad. haha

You left out Blie Moves, and A simple Man. But even though the albums you have listed deffinatly have a different sound progressively,I do still love the music on your least favorite albums. For example, Grimsby,Ticking,Your so static, only to name a few off of Caribou, is some fantastic music.

i know what you mean about some of the songs on caribou, i love ' i've seen the saucers'.
but up against the other albums - and yes
i knew i forgot blue moves. i didnt know if simple man was a 70's album or not.
i would put caribou before blue moves and simple man to finish off the list
